MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu here said Thursday it has named Sherry Smith executive vice president and chief financial officer, a position she had been filling on an interim basis.

Smith, 49, was senior vice president of finance when she was named interim CFO in July to succeed Pamela Knous, who left Supervalu to pursue other interests. At that time, Supervalu said it had engaged an executive search firm to fill the position on a permanent basis.

Smith, a 25-year industry veteran, joined Supervalu in 1987 and has held several positions in accounting and finance at the retailer and wholesaler. In her new post, she will report to Craig Herkert, president and chief executive officer.

“Her guidance and leadership during the past several months made it increasingly clear to the executive search committee and me that she is the best candidate to lead our finance efforts going forward,” Herkert said in a prepared statement.
