A&P Gets Bids on 12 Stores

MONTVALE, N.J. — A&P last week said it received bids for 12 of the 25 SuperFresh stores put up for sale in a bankruptcy auction, and said it expects to realize up to $40 million as the result of the sales.

Springfield, N.J.-based Village Super Market, a ShopRite operator, said it anticipates buying two of the stores — in White Oak, Md., and Timonium, Md. — for $6.6 million, as part of a larger bid by a consortium. Village said it expects to convert the stores to ShopRite this summer.

A&P described the consortium as a joint venture between Village and Mrs. Green's Management Corp., which it said bid for 10 of the of the stores altogether, including nine in Maryland and one in Washingon, D.C. Supervalu bid on one other location, and another store has received a purchase offer from its landlord. In addition, A&P received bids for pharmacy prescription lists for seven stores from three bidders (Walgreen and Safeway, three lists each; and CVS, one list), A&P sources said.

A&P said it would file motions in U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeking approval of the proposed sales to these winning bidders for a hearing on June 14. The company said it would evaluate options, including closure, for 13 stores that did not receive bids for which A&P is seeking court approval.
