LOWER ALLEN TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Ahold USA will build a new meat-processing facility here with funding assistance from the state, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett’s office said Tuesday.
Ahold, parent of the Giant-Carlisle, Giant-Landover and Stop & Shop chains, will invest “at least $63 million” to build the new, 162,000-square-foot facility, which will be run by Wichita, Kan.-based Vantage Foods. Plans call for the hiring of 850 workers to staff the facility, the state said.

Ahold USA will receive a $1.275 million PA First grant, which will be used toward the cost of the project. Vantage Foods was offered and is eligible to apply for $360,000 in job training assistance and up to $1.7 million in job creation tax credits.
“Ahold USA is proud to be part of the economic engine of central Pennsylvania, bringing new jobs to the region and a new business, Vantage Foods, to the state,” Mark McGowan, executive vice president, Supply Chain, Ahold USA, said. “This meat packaging facility is a significant investment in the future and these incentives will help us ensure its long-term success.”
The facility, which is expected to be operational by late 2013, will produce beef and pork products for the Giant-Carlisle and Giant-Landover divisions, an Ahold spokeswoman told SN. She also said the facility would seek LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.
“Ahold USA selected Vantage Foods after conducting a thorough review of potential partners,” Tracey Pawelski, the Ahold spokeswoman, told SN. “Vantage Foods has an excellent reputation and track record working with companies across our industry.”
Vantage also operates a facility in Lenoir, N.C., that supplies the South Region of Martin’s Food Markets, a division of Giant-Carlisle.
