Disruptors 2020: 12 people, companies and trends to watch in 2020
Our annual look at the influencers and innovators in food retail includes the new CEOs of Walmart U.S., Albertsons and Sprouts Farmers Markets, and also singles out companies like Ahold Delhaize USA, the supermarket chain that is undergoing a blitz of activity on the East Coast, and dollar-store leader Dollar General, currently undergoing a chainwide transformation and seeing explosive growth (with more than 1,000 new stores planned for 2020).
Outside of specific retailers, this year’s disruptive trends include the continued rise of the small-format grocery store, with retailers such as Target, Hy-Vee and Giant Food rolling out more of these convenient, often urban locations; and the growth of value grocery chains, spurred on by the continued success of Aldi and Lidl.
Meanwhile, with online grocery orders escalating, automated micro-fulfillment centers (MFCs) are becoming the go-to solution for retailers trying to solve the cost/productivity equation and relatively quickly be able to meet e-commerce demand.
Check out SN’s Disruptors 2020 for our picks of the coming year’s most exciting trends and innovations, and the people and companies who will be bringing them to the retail landscape.
