NEIBERGALL NAMED PRESIDENT OF SAFEWAY EAST

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway has announced that Steve Neibergall has become president of the company's Eastern division. He replaces Hank Cominiello, who joins the company's corporate retail operations team as group vice president, retail initiatives. Neibergall came to Safeway in 1989 as a store manager trainee in the Phoenix division, where he progressed through a variety of retail store and district manager assignments. He was promoted to vice president, retail operations, in Safeway's Northern California division in 2000, then to the same position at Dominick's in 2002 and in the Phoenix division in 2004. He was promoted to his most recent position, senior vice president of produce and floral, in 2005.

SUPERVALU PROMOTES VAN HELDEN TO EVP POST

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu here said it has elevated Pete Van Helden to executive vice president and president, Retail West. Van Helden most recently had been senior vice president and president, Retail West. He is responsible for retail operations in Southern California, Nevada and the Intermountain West region. Van Helden joined Supervalu through the company's 2006 acquisition of Albertsons, where he had been president and chief executive officer of Albertsons' California Food Division.

FORMER FLEMING EXECUTIVE MAY LEAVES PAYLESS

TOPEKA, Kan. — William E. May, the former executive of grocery wholesalers Nash Finch and Fleming Cos. who was named chief operating officer at Payless ShoeSource here in April, resigned from Payless, the company said in a government filing last week. May assumed duties as COO and senior vice president of operations for Payless on April 23. The company said he resigned for “personal reasons.” Payless last week announced it would buy rival Stride Rite for $800 million and rename itself Collective Brands. May most recently served as senior vice president at Tween Brands. Prior to that he served as chief executive officer for Fleming's wholesale division, and as a COO for Nash Finch.
