SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion plans to open three stores in New Castle County, Del., by the end of this year, marking the retailer’s first foray into the Greater Wilmington area.

The stores are set to open in Claymont, New Castle and Bear, Del., beginning next month. A Food Lion spokeswoman declined to say whether the chain planned further northern expansion to Philadelphia or southern New Jersey, but in a statement told SN, “As always, we continually evaluate market opportunities in the regions in which we operate, such as the new stores in Delaware. While the new stores will provide Food Lion additional growth in cities in which we do not have stores at this time, we look forward to serving new customers in this region.”

Food Lion currently operates several stores in southern Delaware.
