WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans here has named Robert G. Miller, chief executive officer of Albertsons LLC, as its 2012 Horatio Alger Award winner.

The award is given to individuals "whose courage and determination allowed them to overcome the challenges they faced early in their lives and achieve success in their fields," the association said in a statement.

Miller will become a lifetime member of the association, which works to provide high school seniors with the financial resources and mentorship they need to pursue a college degree.

In 1999 Miller established the Robert G. Miller Endowed Scholarship Fund for students in the food industry at Portland State University. More recently, he donated $250,000 to Boise State University to fund 50 scholarships over the next 10 years.

Miller has been CEO of Albertsons LLC since mid-2006. From December 1999 until June 2003 he was CEO of Rite Aid Corp. and served as its chairman until mid-2007. Earlier he was vice chairman and chief operating officer of Kroger Co. after Kroger acquired Fred Meyer Inc., Portland, Ore. — a company at which Miller served as CEO from 1991 until 1999.
