MIAMI — Sedano’s Supermarkets here said Friday that it would expand to the Orlando market for the first time with the purchase of three Albertsons stores there.

Sedano’s said it would take over the stores from current operator Albertsons LLC early next year. A purchase price was not disclosed.

“We’ve been doing our homework on different areas of Florida to expand to, and we’ve been wanting to get into the Orlando market for some time now,” Javier Herrán, director of marketing for Sedano’s, told SN in an interview Friday.

“[Investment banking firm] Food Partners approached us with the possibility of buying a few Albertsons stores there, and we jumped on it. We think they are going to be a great fit for us — the demographics of the area are about the same as what we serve here in South Florida.”

The stores are located on Orange Blossom Trail and Curry Ford Road in Orlando and on John Young Parkway in Kissimmee. They range in size from 58,000 to 65,000 square feet.

Sedano’s is recognized as the largest Hispanic retailer in the United States, with 30 stores in South Florida and $442 million in sales in 2008.
