BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Spartan Stores plans to shutter its upscale Zucca's store here, according to reports. The 35,000-square-foot store was converted in 2004 by its former owner, Felpausch Food Centers, Hastings, Mich., to the experimental Zucca's concept, featuring an emphasis on perishables and natural and organic offerings.

Spartan acquired the Felpausch chain in 2007 and undertook and aggressive remodeling program at the stores. Local reports said Spartan planned to focus on its other stores in the area after the planned closure next month of Zucca's. A spokesperson for Spartan could not be reached for comment.
