Storm-Damaged Fairway Eyes Reopening

NEW YORK — A Fairway Market location that was heavily damaged by flooding during Hurricane Sandy will reopen “better than ever and more customer friendly,” according to Andy Zuleta, general manager of the store.

NEW YORK — A Fairway Market location that was heavily damaged by flooding during Hurricane Sandy will reopen “better than ever and more customer friendly,” according to Andy Zuleta, general manager of the store.

The store in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood along the New York Harbor waterfront took on more than four feet of water during the peak of the storm late last month. Nearly all of the equipment, fixtures and merchandise were destroyed in the store, which occupies a historic coffee warehouse more than 150 years old.

Fairway founder Howard Glickberg in a video posted this week said Fairway officials are hopeful the store would reopen in six to eight weeks. In another video, Zuleta tours the floors of the store, now empty except for commercial drying equipment and a lone coffee roaster.
