PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Trader Joe's is planning its first upstate New York store near a flagship Wegmans Food Markets location, according to reports.

Construction on the 14,000-square-foot Trader Joe's store is set to begin in January, with an opening planned for late summer or fall, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

Monrovia, Calif.-based Trader Joe's currently has 16 locations in the New York City market but none in upstate New York.

Wegmans, based in nearby Rochester, N.Y., already competes with Trader Joe's in other areas.
