WASHINGTON — The United Food and Commercial Workers International union here said it is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for president, citing his popularity among younger workers and his support of union-friendly issues. “While both Sens. [Hillary] Clinton and Obama have a vision to change America, we believe that Sen. Obama is the best candidate to unite our country that will deliver the type of change this needed — for good jobs, affordable health care, retirement security and worker safety,” Joe Hansen, president of the UFCW, said in a statement. Hansen noted that more than 40% of UFCW members are under the age of 30, and that young people have been inspired by Obama’s messages. Shortly after the UFCW made its endorsement, Obama picked up the support of the Service Employees International Union. Change to Win, the coalition of unions that includes the UFCW and SEIU, is expected to decide whether to endorse a particular candidate this week, reports said Friday.
