PHOENIX — United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 99 here said it plans a protest today outside Bashas' human resources office here to protest the chain's decision to outsource its baler operations to a third party. A spokeswoman for the Chandler, Ariz.-based chain told SN the 29 employees who are being affected by the change were told a week ago Bashas' could attempt to help them find other jobs in the distribution center or else they could seek employment with the third party — TBG Logistics here. Bashas' has found jobs for six of the 29, while the futures of the other 23 have not yet been determined, the spokeswoman said. She said Bashas' decided to outsource the baler operation to improve its efficiencies, noting that two major competitors also outsource that job. UFCW Local 99 does not represent any of the warehouse employees but has an ongoing dispute with the company over whether its employees should be unionized.
