Wegmans, Others Among Fortune’s ‘Best Employers’

Wegmans Food Markets retained its position as the No. 3 firm for the second consecutive year on Fortune magazine’s list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For.

NEW YORK — Wegmans Food Markets retained its position as the No. 3 firm for the second consecutive year on Fortune magazine’s list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For. The Rochester, N.Y.-based supermarket operator, which has 71 stores, has appeared on the list in each of the 11 years it has been published. In a prepared statement, Wegmans said it boosted employment by about 5.6% in 2007, to 37,602 workers. Other supermarkets on the list include Nugget Markets, Woodland, Calif., at No. 12; Whole Foods Market, Austin, Texas, at No. 16; Stew Leonard’s, Norwalk, Conn., at No. 26; and Publix Super Markets, Lakeland, Fla., at No. 91. Suppliers on the list included Starbucks, No. 7; S.C. Johnson & Son, No. 27; J.M. Smucker, No. 47; General Mills, No. 69; and AstraZeneca, No. 83. Valero Energy, a San Antonio-based fuel station and C-store operator, also made the list again this year, at No. 67.
