Weis Markets is trying to improve its energy efficiency by installing Aeroseal duct sealing technology, reports Chain Store Age.

The sealing fixes small air leaks that can occur after system installation or while a duct system ages. Partnering with energy services company Sona Energy, a pilot project was done with existing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems without disrupting store operations or infrastructure.

The increase in airflow efficiency allowed stores to reduce fan speed, electrical use, and fuel consumption.

Weis Markets said the sealing reduces maintenance, and results from the pilot included a leak reduction of just over 20% and energy savings of $5,000 annually.

Three additional stores received the Aeroseal treatment this year, and Weis Markets expects to install the system in more stores in 2024.

Weis Markets, headquartered in Sunbury, Pa., has engaged in other energy-efficient methods, including LED light installation, eco-friendly refrigerants, and skylights that allow stores to dim ceiling lights during the day.
