JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As a means to prepare for the hurricane season, Winn-Dixie here said Wednesday it would install 500-kilowatt generators in 66 of its stores in areas affected in recent years by power failures due to hurricanes and tropical storms. The new diesel-powered generators are capable of running an entire store, including coolers and freezers, the retailer said. All 521 stores have backup generator power but those systems cannot keep an entire store and its equipment operating. Winn-Dixie expects that the new generators will be installed in 66 locations in Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi by next month.
