PARIS, Texas — The Campbell Soup Co. is voluntarily pulling 15 million pounds of SpaghettiOs with Meatballs due to a cooker malfunction discovered in a plant here last week.

Affected varieties are 14.75-ounce cans of SpaghettiOs with Meatballs, SpaghettiOs A to Z with Meatballs, and SpaghettiOs Fun Shapes with Meatballs with use-by dates between June 2010 and December 2011 and the plant code EST4K.

The problem was discovered through a routine warehouse inspection on June 15. The recall was issued two days later.

Cans of fully cooked pasta and meatballs are placed in the cooker and heated for sterilization, spokesman Anthony Sanzio explained.

“We’re fairly confident that the malfunction was a recent event but we couldn’t be certain so in the interest of consumer safety we recalled the full shelf life of the product,” said Sanzio, who would not provide information about the frequency of inspections. There have been no reports of illness.

In other recall news, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has discovered a possible association between ConAgra Foods’ Marie Callender’s Cheesy Chicken & Rice single-serve frozen entrees and eight people diagnosed with salmonellosis linked to Salmonella Chester.

The discovery prompted a precautionary recall of the product by ConAgra. CDC interviews identified people who reported eating the meal in April and May. The last illness was reported May 22.
