Sunland Peanuts Added to Ongoing Recall

PORTALES, N.M. — Raw and roasted shelled and in-shell peanuts have been added to Sunland Inc.’s ongoing recall after Salmonella was detected in nuts from its peanut processing facility here.

The peanuts were sold in quantities from 2 ounces to 50 pounds, primarily under Sunland’s own label and were distributed to produce houses and nationally to large supermarket chains.

The Sunland recall began with Trader Joe's brand peanut butter last month and grew to include scores of almond and peanut butters sold under Target’s Archer Farms, Heinen’s, Sprouts Farmers Market, Open Nature, Fresh & Easy and other brands. Chocolate butter, cashew butter, tahini and roasted blanched peanut products were later added. The items were produced in a separate building from where raw and roasted peanuts are processed.

A total of 35 people from 19 states have been infected with the Salmonella Bredeney outbreak strain linked to the nut products. Close to two-thirds (63%) are children under 10. Eight people have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported.
