Dom's Kitchen & Market to open 3rd Chicago location next summer

Dom’s Kitchen & Market is planning to open its newest location next summer in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, as the upscale grocer remains “bullish” about future growth, CEO Don Fitzgerald told Winsight Grocery Business on Wednesday.

The store, which will occupy the first floor of One Superior Place at 30 W. Huron, was formerly a Whole Foods supermarket. The 25,000-square-foot grocery store will be the third location for Dom’s Kitchen & Market since it launched in 2021.

“As our footprint in Chicago grows, so does the Dom’s team, and our ability to support local vendors, serve our community and create new job opportunities,” Fitzgerald said. “With the opening of Dom’s River North, we anticipate creating 150 new full- and part-time jobs. Dom’s takes great pride in being a Chicago independent kitchen and market innovating the meal shopping experience.” 

The grocer's flagship location in Lincoln Park is located at 2730 North Halsted Street and the Old Town grocery store is located at 1233 North Wells Street. Fitzgerald said the look and design of the retailer’s third location will be “directionally more similar to the Lincoln Park location than the Old Town store.”

Dom’s is known for its thousands of curated products, many of which are globally inspired, seasonally driven and locally sourced from Chicago and Midwest entrepreneurs and purveyors.

Fitzgerald up until recently served as the grocery retailer’s co-CEO with grocery titan Bob Mariano. Mariano is now co-chairman of the board of directors along with Jay Owen, Dom’s co-founder and chairman.

"We are always evaluating new locations. Our commitment to expand our presence within the Chicagoland area remains continuous and robust,” Mariano said in a statement.

With the grocery landscape ever changing with various proposed mergers and acquisitions, Fitzgerald admitted “we'll watch from the corner of our eye—but we'll focus on growing.”

Chicago’s 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly said Dom's will be a "great addition" to the River North neighborhood he serves.  

"I look forward to welcoming this exciting Chicago-born business and know our residents will embrace this unique shopping and dining experience,” Reilly said in a statement.

Initial plans for an Oak Park location of Dom's have been scrapped, but Fitzgerald said the retailer is continuing to look at real estate in and around the Chicago area to broaden its brick-and-mortar presence.

“We’re born and bred here in Chicago and we are continuing to evaluate sites,” Fitzgerald said. “We’ve got some things in motion.”

Dom’s is led by Fitzgerald, a former senior executive at Dominick’s, Roundy’s and Mariano’s. Bob Mariano and Jay Owen both serve as co-chairmen of the retailer's board of directors.
