Hannaford Supermarkets is continuing to get bigger by going smaller.

The Scarborough, Maine-based food retailer this week will open a new unit in Mechanic Falls, Maine, that would be the smallest of the company’s 180 supermarkets to include both food and pharmacy.

The store, scheduled for a grand opening July 28, will carry a tight selection of 16,000 items and offer a full-service pharmacy in a 20,000-square-foot footprint.

The opening follows a North Berwick, Maine, store that opened in 2015 debuting Hannaford’s small-box prototype. The stores were developed as part of the company’s “Project 2020” initiative to reconfigure stores for changes in how consumers shop, including a trend toward convenience in shopping and meal preparation.

The new store will feature a full-service deli, handcrafted sandwiches and salads made on-site daily, a beer cave, in-store cut fruit, and “hand crafted” sections in the meat department. The store will carry local products from Maine farmers and producers such as Pineland Farms, EW Mailhot Sausage, Maine Family Farm Meats, and Lucarelli’s Bread and Rolls.

The full-service pharmacy will provide customers a private consultation room, where they can talk privately with their pharmacist about medication or receive an immunization.

The store will employ between 80 to 100 full- and part-time associates.

Hannaford, based in Scarborough, Maine, is a division of Ahold Delhaize.
