Hy-Vee semitrailers, Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobiles and hundreds of employees were on hand in Eastern Iowa to help distribute $250,000 in food and water to residents who were affected by the derecho with sustained 100 mile-per-hour winds that ravaged the state on Aug. 10 and caused more damage than some tornadoes. The storm left residents without power for days in addition to damaging buildings and surrounding cropland.

“The damage inflicted by this storm to our communities is unlike anything we’ve seen in a long time, as it cut such a wide path across the state and hit so many areas,” said Randy Edeker, chairman of the board, president and CEO of Hy-Vee. “The damage is especially severe in the eastern portion of the state, and we want to do whatever we can to help those residents as they clean up their neighborhoods and begin the recovery process.”

Drive-thru donation pickup sites were set up in Cedar Rapids, Marshalltown, Marion and Toledo, Iowa.
