Jewel-Osco has appointed a new president following the sudden death of Doug Cygan earlier this month.

The retailer is pulling from within the Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons family, naming Paul Gossett, who previously led New England-based Shaw’s and Star Market chains, its new president.

Gossett started his retail career with Albertsons in 1977, and has also held roles such as VP of marketing for Philadelphia-based Acme Markets, operational positions with Jacksonville, Fla.-based based Winn-Dixie and was senior director of merchandising for Edina, Minn.-based Nash Finch Co.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Gossett expressed his fondness for Cygan, who was known for his cheerful demeanor and support of younger colleagues.

“It’s difficult. Those are big shoes to fill. I don’t look at myself as a replacement of Doug, but I hope to build on what he started,” he told the Tribune. He called Cygan a “friend and confidant” who he regularly spoke to and traded ideas with.

Gossett also currently serves on the Philanthropic Board of Advisors for the Boston Children’s Hospital Trust and the boards of the Greater Boston Food Bank and the Massachusetts Food Association.
