Karns Quality Foods, with eight locations in Pennsylvania, will open its ninth store at a former Darrenkamp’s site in Etters, Pa. It will be the independent retailer’s first store in York County.

Darrenkamp’s closed three of its four locations at the end of 2018 and sold the fourth to Giant Food Stores, a banner of Ahold Dehaize. The 39,000-square-foot store, which will only require some interior updating, is expected to open in early 2020 and will feature Karn’s signature 84-foot meat and seafood counter that will front the in-store butchery. It will also include an updated produce department, self-checkouts and an expanded salad bar.

“Karns Foods is excited about the opportunity to be joining the York community,” President Scott Karns said in a news release. “The Karns food team can’t wait to share our extensive meat and seafood departments, in-store sausage offerings, fresh produce, locally sourced products and arguably the best whoopie pies in town.”

Karns also is expanding its store in New Bloomfield, Pa., by 10,000 square feet.

“We really take our time as a company to grow smartly, making sure our resources are lined up and we are able to meet the needs of everyone we are encountering and serving,” said Andrea Karns, VP of sales and marketing, in a local news report. “It’s not about the numbers, it’s about doing the job well.”
