Lidl to Build Distribution Center, Regional Headquarters in Georgia

In a signal of intentions to continue growing behind new stores in the South, Lidl U.S. will build a distribution center and regional headquarters in Covington, Ga., company and state officials said.

The 925,000-square-foot facility will be the fourth distribution center in the U.S. for the Arlington, Va,-based discounter and division of Germany’s Schwarz Group.

Lidl said it would be investing $100 million in the project, which would create 270 new full-time jobs.

“I am grateful for Lidl’s investment in Georgia and the tremendous opportunities that it will create for hardworking Georgians in Newton County,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement. “Our logistics infrastructure puts domestic and international markets within arm’s reach, and leading brands from around the world are taking notice.”

The center will supply products to Lidl stores across the region. Lidl cited Georgia’s logistics infrastructure as critical to the location of this new facility, which is close to Interstate 20 in Newton County, about 35 miles southeast of Atlanta.

Lidl currently operates distribution centers in Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.

Lidl has opened four stores in Georgia with units in Augusta, Mableton, Marietta and Snellville. Lidl first established its U.S. headquarters in Virginia in June 2015 and operates more than 85 stores across nine East Coast states.
