In a year where retail has been upended by a pandemic and nationwide civil unrest, Lunds & Byerlys is showing appreciation for all of its staff’s efforts by closing on Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving. The day will be a paid holiday in addition to the paid day off on Thanksgiving, when all locations also will be closed.

The Minneapolis-based retailer wanted to reward the staff for their efforts “navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest in and around some of its locations.”

Lunds & Byerlys will close all of its 27 stores, production facilities and support offices.

“What all of us have experienced together has certainly been unprecedented and so, too, has been the collective effort of our staff to face it all with a level of care, compassion and commitment to each other and our customers,” said Tres Lund, president and CEO of Lunds & Byerlys. “We know the gift of time is priceless, and we hope our staff is able to use this additional paid holiday to recharge and make even more great memories with their loved ones during the holiday season.”

The paid days off are in addition to appreciation or hero pay that all retail and food production staff received during the pandemic as well as a profit-sharing bonus that will be distributed in November.
