June 7 is National Donut Day, and if you like doughnuts, you are in luck. A large number of grocery retailers have fried up specials to celebrate one of America's favorite foods.

Arizona-based Bashas’ prepared for National Donut Day with a contest in which both kids and adults were invited to celebrate the wonders and beauty of there home state by submitting a doughnut flavor creation that encapsulates what they love most about Arizona.

Entries ranged from the sweet to the savory, and a panel of celebrity judges selected the winning doughnut in each category based on a 100-word description of the best-tasting idea.

Submissions for winning doughnuts came with a unique name, details about key ingredients, and why the doughnut perfectly portrays the Grand Canyon State. An 8-year-old girl named Glory from Maricopa, Ariz., used the desert as inspiration for her winning kids category entry: the Spiky Cactus, a raspberry-filled donut with green icing and white sprinkles depicting a cactus in bloom. In the adult category, the winner was the Haboob Creme Filled, created by Joanne from Chandler, Ariz., filled with vanilla pudding with finely crushed vanilla wafer cookies mixed in.

Both winning doughnuts will be featured in Bashas’ bakery cases across the state during the month of June, joining the grocer’s other made-from-scratch treats, including doughnuts, fritters, croissants, Danishes, brownies, frosted cookies, cakes, cupcakes and more. Bashas’, who has been actively expanding and remodeling stores throughout Arizona, will be donating 10% of sales proceeds to support The Salvation Army’s family services.

Bowman's Markets, an independent in Utah whose bakery boasts selling 500 to 1,000 dozen doughnuts a day, says it will celebrate the the day by sending a doughnut into space, as described by Bowman's workers in the below video.

Other retailers are equally as excited. Strack & Van Til has been plugging #NationalDonutDay with a buy one, get one free special for fresh-baked doughnuts all day Friday, while also offering specials on national brands such as Entenmann's.

Midwestern independent grocer Martin's Super Market is offering every customer who walks into one of their stores a free doughnut or a dollar off a dozen doughnuts from their case, while supplies last.
