Schnucks to Close Shrewsbury, Mo., Store
Location was acquired from SuperValu in 2018 and will close June 27. The St. Louis-based retailer said it will work with the store's 57 team members to place them in nearby locations at the same rate of pay after the store closes on June 27.
St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets will close its Shrewsbury, Mo., store on June 27 after opting not to renew the location's lease, the family-owned grocer has announced.
Schnucks acquired the 77,000-square-foot store at 7057 Chippewa St. in October 2018 from UNFI subsidiary SuperValu. Since then, according to a Schnucks news release, the location hasn't matched the performance of nearby Schnucks stores—there are two others within 3 miles—prompting the decision not to renew the store's lease when it expires on Nov. 13.
"Even in the midst of the pandemic when other stores saw growth, our Shrewsbury location continued to underperform," Schnucks Chairman and CEO Todd Schnuck said in a news release. The store's 57 employees will be offered roles at nearby Schnucks locations at the same rate of pay, according to the company.
After the Shrewsbury store's closure at 4 p.m. on June 27, Schnucks will operate 110 stores in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, including 79 in the metropolitan St. Louis area. The company's third location in Columbia, Mo.—home to the University of Missouri's flagship campus—will open later this year, as will a new, smaller Schnucks Fresh concept in Jasper, Ind. The debut Schnucks Fresh location, opening in a former Cash Saver store, will be 18,000 square feet and employ approximately 30 people.
