St. Louis-based Schnucks is offering customers a new opportunity to support local charities: Starting May 5, Schnucks Rewards members can opt to donate their rewards points to one of several selected not-for-profit organizations serving their community.

Customers can choose to donate their points—all or a portion of them, either at one time or on an ongoing basis—through the Schnucks website or using the Schnucks app. Among the more than 75 selected organizations serving the communities in which Schnucks' 111 stores operate are the Salvation Army, the Humane Society of Missouri, Mission: St. Louis and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

"This program enables customers to help organizations that support fighting food insecurity; developing the workforce; promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, youth and education, health and wellness, and animal welfare, simply by shopping at Schnucks," the company stated in a news release.

Family-owned Schnuck Markets reached out to employees to ask which organizations they would like to see supported through the program, the company added. Participating organizations will receive bulk donations twice a year.

The grocer, which operates in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, closed a handful of underperforming stores in the past two years but is debuting remodels of others and announced plans to expand its presence in Indiana with the launch of a smaller-format Schnucks Fresh concept in Jasper, Ind.
