Walmart Commits $1M to Help Afghan Refugees and Veterans
Walmart Foundation pledges support to two refugee-serving groups as well as the organization behind the National Military Survivor Helpline. The Walmart Foundation is lending its support to No One Left Behind, the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service and the veteran-serving Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (T.A.P.S.).
Walmart Inc. announced that its charitable arm, the Walmart Foundation, will give a total of $1 million to three organizations providing assistance to Afghan refugees and U.S. military veterans.
The recipients include No One Left Behind and the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, both of which are working to help Afghan nationals who served alongside U.S. military forces secure special immigration visas, as well as the veterans-focused Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (T.A.P.S.).
"All of us have seen the horrific images coming out of Afghanistan, and as a company that is in every community almost throughout the country, we want to be there to help support not only our returning veterans from Afghanistan, but those who stood side-by-side over so many years, supporting, protecting and fighting alongside our troops," Walmart Executive VP of Corporate Affairs Dan Bartlett said in a statement.
"These are people who have directly saved American lives" as translators, emissaries and soldiers, Bartlett continued, "and now we’re trying to help facilitate their access to some part of the freedom and future we’ve spent so long working toward together."
Walmart's financial support for T.A.P.S., the company noted, will help that organization expand capacity within its National Military Survivor Helpline, a 24/7 service for veterans and their families.
On Aug. 25, the Biden Administration announced that the United States has evacuated more than 82,000 individuals from Kabul since Aug. 14.
