Three grocers were named to the coveted 2020 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For: Wegmans, Publix Super Markets and Nugget Markets. Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans, which nabbed the No. 3 spot this year, has made the list for all 23 years since the list’s inception.
Conducted by Great Place to Work and Fortune, this year’s list is based on survey responses from more than 650,000 employees rating their workplace culture on more than 60 elements of the workplace, including trust in managers, respect, fairness and camaraderie.
“The 100 Best show the way forward,” Michael Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work, said in a statement. “These companies have created great places to work for all—for everyone, no matter who a person is or what they do for the organization. As a result, they have built a path to realize the promise of artificial intelligence, gain strength from a diversity of perspectives and thrive during downturns.”
“We are so grateful for our dedicated employees who have made us a part of this list for the past 23 years,” Wegmans President and CEO Colleen Wegman, said in a release. “Our people make shopping and working at Wegmans a truly special experience every day.”
The honor is well-timed for Wegmans, which is now hiring for new stores set to open in Harrison, N.Y., in June and in West Cary, N.C., and Tysons Corner, Va., later in 2020.
This year also marks the 23rd consecutive year that Publix of Lakeland, Fla., has been named one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For, ranking No. 39. Publix and Wegmans are two of only eight companies to have made the list every year since its inception in 1998.
“I’m proud we continue to be recognized as a great place to work,” Publix CEO Todd Jones said in a release. “These honors show the dedication our associates have to perpetuating the values Mr. George [Jenkins] founded Publix on 90 years ago. We know these values are what make our company great and what make Publix the place where shopping is a pleasure.”
Coming in at No. 79 this year, Nugget Markets has made Fortune’s 100 Best list 15 times. The Woodland, Calif.-based family-owned company known for its dynamic culture and work-life balance has also earned recent recognitions as a top workplace for women and diversity.
“We have a strong culture of family and fun at the core of everything we do,” Eric Stille, president and CEO of Nugget Markets, said in a statement. “As a company, we have three main goals: guest satisfaction, constant improvement and to be a world-class employer. I am so proud of our teams for making these goals become a reality—they aren’t just words on a wall, they’re what we live by.”
Dedicated to investing in its approximately 1,900 associates, Nugget Markets offers a variety of professional development opportunities, including classes, field trips and college scholarships to help team members reach their goals and grow in their careers.
Nugget’s company culture also focuses on positivity, camaraderie and fun with associate recognition, cash prizes and storewide celebrations. The grocer has never had a layoff in its 94-year history, and its industry-leading benefits include a 401(k) with company match, flexible work schedule and zero healthcare premiums for full- and part-time associates.
