The Lempert Report

According to the Food Marketing Institute, Arlington, Va., there are more than 38,000 supermarkets in the U.S., and 25,000 are conventional or traditional markets offering a full line of groceries, meat and produce, and generating annual sales of at least $2 million.

Last year, a team of business school researchers at Washington University in St. Louis found that 83% of shoppers regularly visited between four and nine stores for groceries over a 12-month period, underscoring how non-loyal shoppers are these days to a particular chain.

24/7 Tempo assembled a list of the most popular grocery stores around the country, based on the number of Yelp reviews they've received and the overall scores Yelp users have given them. While Yelp is not the end all be all—or even, some may argue, not as survey science-based as Consumer Reports' two-times-a-year supermarket survey—there are lessons to be learned by reading the reviews from actual shoppers, including what they like and don’t like about your stores.

24/7 Tempo compiled this list by considering the total number of Yelp reviews and the cumulative scores given to almost 350 of the most popular supermarkets and other grocery stores around the country.

A list of the top 10 includes some beloved independents and stores belonging to smaller retailers, such as Kukje Super Market in Daly City, Calif., and the Takahashi Market in San Mateo, Calif., as well as Bi-Rite Market and Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco. Some national chain locations broke the top 10 too, including a Costco in Honolulu and a Trader Joe's in New York. Berkeley, Calif.'s Berkeley Bowl Marketplace came in at No. 2 and the top-ranked grocery store was Eataly NYC Flatiron in Manhattan.

Feedback from satisfied and not satisfied customers is one of the most important tools we have. Pay attention.
