SAN ANTONIO  — Alison Spangler, a teacher here, is the $10,000 grand-prize winner of H-E-B's first-ever Community Slim Down Showdown competition.

Over the course of the 16-week contest, Spangler lost 48 pounds and dropped from a size 24 to a size 16.

“Before, I wasn’t doing anything at all. Zero. Now I exercise every day,” she said.

Spangler competed against 23 other contestants chosen from a pool of more than 500 applicants. H-E-B determined the overall winner using three metrics — overall health and weight loss, participation and fan engagement.
