SAN ANTONIO — H.E. Butt Grocery Co. is publicizing the state’s tax-free shopping weekend here that has been expanded this year to include school supplies, in addition to clothes.

“Get your back-to-school tax break at H-E-B,” says the retailer on its website. “From way cool binders to the hottest backpacks and basic supplies, H-E-B is here to help you balance your tight schedule and budget with amazing savings on back-to-school essentials.”

From Aug. 21 -23, shoppers can shop tax-free at retail stores for clothes and backpacks under $100. The Texas Legislature expanded the list of qualifying items in 2009 to include most school supplies priced at less than $100 purchased for use by a student in an elementary or secondary school. Among the included supplies: notebooks, paper, pencils, markers and crayons.
