SEATTLE — PCC Natural Markets plans to start using quick-esponse codes in the produce department so that shoppers can see product-specific informational videos on their smart phones.

QR Codes are barcodes that smart phones can read to display text, a Web page or even video.

The QR code got its start in the Japanese auto industry for inventory purposes.

Because it holds more data than standard bar codes, the QR code has caught on in other industries.

Within the near future, PCC plans to test QR codes on shelf talkers for melons and avocados, according to Ricardo Rabago, the retailer’s social media specialist.

Once a shopper snaps a photo of the code with a smart phone, a two-minute, how-to video will appear on the phone. Called “PCC Quick Bites,” the videos will give tips on how to select, cut and serve the fruit.

At a time when a growing number of consumers have smart phones, like the iPhones, Androids and other models equipped with QR readers, the strategy is a useful communication tool, according to Rabago.
