PARIS -- Carrefour here said it expects to open its first store in Japan in December 2000.

Carrefour said it has created a subsidiary, called Carrefour Japan K.K., whose aim is to establish a presence for the French retailer in Japan. The company acknowledged it was assisted in the process of bidding for the site by Mitsui Fudosan, a real estate development company that will provide support for construction and facilities management.

Local sources said Carrefour is investigating possible store sites in and around the Tokyo area for future expansion.

Carrefour operates 366 stores in 20 countries, with total sales of $25.8 billion (U.S.) in 1998.
