American Taps 2 Executive VPs
n Stores here has named Teresa Beck executive vice president and chief financial officer and Francis J. Raucci executive vice president and chief labor counsel.
Beck, who joined the company in 1982, was executive vice president of finance. The chief financial officer's position at American had been vacant.
Beck is responsible for financial and retail accounting, information systems, tax, audit, treasury, cash management, risk administration, and public, government and investor relations. She reports to Victor L. Lund, president and chief executive officer.
Raucci was senior vice president and chief labor counsel. His latest position is new to American.
Raucci, who joined American in 1968, is responsible for all aspects of the company's labor relations, including union contract negotiations covering the company's approximately 100,000 union employees. He also reports to Lund.
American operates more than 1,600 stores, including Lucky Stores in California, Jewel Food Stores in the Midwest and Acme Markets in the Mid-Atlantic States.
Supervalu Appoints Associate Counsel
MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu here has named Gary D. Scott associate general counsel, a new position.
Scott is responsible for overall administration of the food distributor's legal department. He reports to David L. Boehnen, senior vice president, law and external relations.
Scott had been vice president and manager of the real estate law division at Safeway, Oakland, Calif., for the past three years. He also held a variety of other real estate and legal positions with Safeway, where he had worked since 1970.
Supervalu supplies more than 4,600 retail food stores in 47 states. It operates 295 corporate retail units.
Publix Names Public Affairs VP
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets here has named M. Clayton Hollis Jr. vice president of public affairs, a new position.
Hollis, who first joined Publix in 1972, had been director of government relations since 1988.
In his new role, Hollis is responsible for the customer relations, government relations, minority affairs, community relations and public relations departments. He reports to Howard Jenkins, chairman and chief executive officer of Publix.
Hollis also is chairman of Keep Florida Beautiful and the Florida Retail Federation.
A Shift at West Point Market
AKRON, Ohio -- West Point Market here has named Terri Freiman director of human resources.
Freiman succeeds Deborah Lautenbach Leidy, who is on maternity leave. When Leidy returns to work, it will be on a part-time basis in an as-yet-undetermined capacity, a spokeswoman said. Freiman formerly was assistant manager of the wine shop.
She reports to Russell Vernon, president and chief executive officer of the one-store operation.
Western Dubs Smathers New VP
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Western Supermarkets here has named Butch Smathers vice president of merchandising, a new position. Smathers formerly was director of perishables operations, a title that has been eliminated.
Ruby Rubira has been named vice president of human resources, a new position. Rubira was director of personnel. Darwin Metcalf, a former store manager, was named director of store operations, a new position.
Smathers, Metcalf and Rubira report to Ken Hubbard, president of the 11-store chain.
