Riley, 46, is responsible for strategic planning as well as operations for the 10-store chain. He reports to Jack Morrison, chairman. The company's strategic plans include its first expansion outside Minnesota when it opens two Chicago-area locations in 1996. Riley said Byerly's plans up to 10 Chicago stores over the next five years in addition to exploring additional expansion opportunities in the Twin Cities area. Riley joined Byerly's in 1971 at store level and held various management positions before being named general manager in 1978. In 1989 he was named director of retail operations and in 1990 he became vice president of retail operations. He has been chief operating officer since 1994. "It's exciting to see Byerly's growing and changing in a way that's consistent with the objectives Don Byerly [the chain's founder] expressed 27 years ago," Riley said. "We're still focused on people -- our employees and our customers -- while at the same time we're making changes that better meet the needs of today's lifestyles."

Senior VP Appointed at H-E-B

SAN ANTONIO -- Scott McClelland was named senior vice president of marketing by H.E. Butt Grocery here.

He succeeds Robert Neslund, who has left the company. He reports to Fully Klingman, chief operating officer and executive vice president.

McClelland joined H-E-B in March 1990 as vice president of store operations in central Texas. His most recent title was group vice president of general merchandise, pharmacy and home, health and beauty.

Prior to joining H-E-B, McClelland was employed in sales and marketing capacities with Hostess Frito-Lay, Canada.

Neslund joined H-E-B in 1991 as senior vice president of marketing. He was responsible for developing the chain's category management program and launching and growing its private-label brand. He was also involved in the design of store formats.

Albertson's Names Unit VP

BOISE, Idaho -- Albertson's here has named Gary Spiers vice president of its Idaho division. He is responsible for the 40 Albertson's stores in southwestern and southeastern Idaho, eastern Oregon and northern Nevada. Spiers, 46, was given the title of division manager when Dick Allen retired in April. That post will not be filled. In his new post Spiers will report to a senior vice president and regional manager, who has not yet been named. In other changes: Larry Hansen, 43, has been named vice president of grocery sales, a new position. He was given the title of director of grocery sales when Al Kasner retired in April.

Hansen reports to Carl Pennington, executive vice president of corporate merchandising. Marcia E. Williams, 39, formerly labor relations manager, has been named director of human resources and diversity, a new position. She reports to Steven D. Young, senior vice president of human resources. Renee Bergquist, 33, formerly senior corporate financial analyst, has been named director of investor relations, a new post. Bergquist will share responsibilities with Dave Connolly, vice president and treasurer, who plans to retire next year.
