Safeway $4 Generic Program Expands to East, Midwest

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway rolled out a $4 generic drug prescription program to its eastern division and Chicago Dominick’s division this week, according to media reports and the company’s websites, which also show that Safeway’s Randall’s, Tom Thumb and Genuardi stores have the program. Safeway did not respond immediately with information about its plans for the rest of the chain; however, others — like Wal-Mart and Kroger — gradually expanded their generics program to all stores with pharmacies. The Safeway program offers a 30-day supply of 300 drugs. In a Washington Post story, spokesman Greg TenEyck said the retailer tested the program in Houston and Dallas in March and that it was a reaction to competition. "It's a little bit of good news for the consumer," TenEyck was quoted as saying. "With fuel prices going up and food prices going up, here's something that's going in the opposite direction."
