TUCSON, Ariz. — A Safeway store here has shielded the cover of Elle magazine featuring a pregnant Jessica Simpson, according to an Associated Press report.
The April edition depicts a photo of the singer/actress/fashion designer on its cover with one hand covering an exposed breast and another wrapped around her nude belly.
A spokeswoman for Safeway, Pleasanton, Calif., told local media the manager of the store received "multiple complaints," so the image was covered with cardboard to block any parts that might be offensive.
Supermarket chains are known to respond to the public’s and special interest groups’ complaints about displaying magazines said to have objectionable headlines or content on their covers. In the past, some food chains instituted “family-friendly” checkout lanes.
