PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway is using a high-value coupon to entice former Walgreens Express Scripts customers to use Safeway pharmacies.

Safeway is offering $25 worth of coupons to all those who transfer their prescriptions to a Safeway pharmacy. The coupon can be used on the next grocery order of $50 or more, excluding beer, tobacco and fuel.

“We welcome Walgreens Express Scripts Plan members,” Safeway writes on the safeway.com website.

The offer is valid through March 31.

The coupon comes at a time when Walgreens announced it will no longer accept Express Scripts insurance due to what it says are unfair prescription drug coverage rates.

In other news, Express Scripts and Medco Health Solutions have entered into a definitive merger agreement. The proposed merger still needs regulatory approval.
