EAST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Shaw's Supermarkets here said that two leaders of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1445, Worcester, Mass., were arrested last week after refusing to leave a Shaw's store there.

The men were Richard Charette, president of Local 1445, and William Danio, UFCW regional director, according to a Shaw's spokesman.

The spokesman told SN that the men had no business in the store and were trespassing.

The spokesman explained: "In late February, based on a petition from a majority of associates in the Worcester-area stores, Shaw's legally withdrew recognition of UFCW Local 1445. Local 1445 continues to ignore the expressed wishes of Shaw's associates. Shaw's will take appropriate steps to ensure that the union does not intimidate our associates or inconvenience our shoppers."

As previously reported, the union has challenged the petition, filing complaints with the National Labor Relations Board. The union and the NLRB could not be reached for comment.
