Well Everyday with Shoprite
Retailers can draw inspiration from Shoprite’s intensive Well Everyday program.
Shoprite has really upped its game in the wellness department. The retailer will always hold a special place in my heart because it is the only grocery store we had growing up in Pearl River, N.Y., but recently Shoprite has genuinely impressed me with its wellness initiatives. Last July, I wrote about how a New Jersey Shoprite was holding fitness classes right in the store. After walking into my hometown Shoprite after not visiting for awhile, I noticed that we had a brand new in-store dietician with her own office right at the front of the store. I also noticed call-outs for Shoprite's dieticians’ “Top 10 Picks for Healthy Eating” located around the produce section.
Shoprite’s Well Everyday program’s “Top 10 Picks” initiative features signage, food demonstrations and other promotions. I noticed the signs clearly next to the blueberries, which are No. 3 on the list, along with almonds at the top as No. 1 and other healthy fare like chickpeas, kale and avocados. The retailer also has some great tips on how to incorporate these items into your daily diet. The dieticians suggest blending blueberries with Greek yogurt for a healthy treat, reducing them to make a glaze for meat, or even mixing them into salsa. Some other creative tips included: freezing avocados into ice cream; roasting chickpeas with olive oil and cinnamon; and baking flax seeds into brownies.
Every retailer does not need to create a wellness program as intensive as Shoprite’s Well Everyday, but taking inspiration from Shoprite’s dedication and creativity could help retailers develop promotions that speak to their unique audiences. If blueberry salsa doesn’t catch the attention of shoppers in a specific area, retailers can instead call attention to local produce, regional favorites or unique items.
