SpartanNash launched a mobile-driven scan, bag and go program in two of its stores, with plans to expand in 2019.
The program, dubbed Check Out Now, allows customers to scan barcodes on products using an app and bag the groceries on their own for a quicker shopping experience. The new app is also compatible with the food distributor's Yes loyalty accounts and will offer participating customers Check Out Now-only deals as well as digital coupons, rewards and fuel savings revealed when paying at a Check Out Now kiosk.
Digital produce scales will be set up around the store to allow shoppers to quickly weigh fresh items for use with the program. The app also keeps a running total as the customer shops and alerts them of savings opportunities as they shop.
Tom Swanson, SpartanNash SVP and general manager of corporate retail, said the technology upgrade is part of a continued effort to enhance its customers' experience and will provide guests with "convenient, personalized solutions and the ability to shop when and how they want.”
The retailer-distributor has been on the hunt for growth opportunities in its retail sector. Efforts have included a recent partnership with consultant Harvest Earnings, the launch of a new careers website and the acquisitions of Caito Foods and the Midwest independent Martin's Super Markets.
“Check Out Now is example of us saying ‘What ways are customers looking to shop with us and how do we meet that demand?’" Matt van Gilder, manager of e-commerce operations for SpartanNash, said in a recent interview with WGB.
Check Out Now is currently operating at the Georgetown and metro Family Fare stores around Grand Rapids, Mich.
