Grocery food inflation stays flat in May

Overall food inflation inched up slightly in May, rising 0.1% month over month, but some food staples trended upwards, according to the Consumer Price Index Report released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

The report shows that food at home remained flat from April results when the category declined 0.2%. Food at home was up 1% year over year. 

The index for dairy products dropped 0.5% from April, driven by a 1.3% decline in the price of milk. The dairy products index dropped 1% over the year. 

Fruit and vegetable prices were unchanged in May, but year over year, the produce index was up 0.6%.

The index for meat, poultry, fish, and eggs was up 0.2%. That follows a 0.7% decrease in the index the previous month. Year over year, the index increased 2.4%.

The index for cereals and bakery products also was up 0.2% for the month and up 0.7% year over year, according to the report. 

Nonalcoholic beverage prices declined 0.3% month over month and increased 1.3% year over year.
