Good Health, creator of crunchy snacks, has awarded $5,000 to Seven Generations Charter School (SGCS) following its recognition as the brand’s Enjoy Doing Good program recipient. The program, which was housed on Good Health’s Facebook page, encouraged fans to enter “doing good” tips in an effort to inspire others to practice acts of kindness within the community while nominating a K-12 school of their choice to receive the cash prize.
“Giving back to our children and the communities we live in is very important to all of us in the Good Health family,” says Mary Schulman, vice president of consumer strategy at Good Health. “We feel so fortunate to contribute to the educational progress and total wellness of the children at Seven Generations Charter School and are so proud and thankful for all the various ‘acts of kindness’ we saw from everyone who entered this contest.”
SGCS’s recognition followed an entry from Amy Beaudet, an original founder of the school who was drawn to the aligning values both Good Health and SGCS uphold: living a healthy, kind and environmentally conscious life. Beaudet currently has a third grader and future kindergartener among the school’s student body.
An alternative to public education, Seven Generations has a unique curriculum framework called Environmental Integrated Curriculum, EIC, which utilizes both the environment and community as the integrating context for learning in grades K-8.
“We strive to help our students be mindful of the choices they make by learning to protect and conserve our natural systems as well as our bodies with healthy foods and physical activities,” says Jen Hersh, curriculum director at SGCS. “Teaching sustainability from a young age helps grow stewardship to create a better, healthier and kinder world.”
The Enjoy Doing Good donation was established to help fund new educational materials and equipment to improve curriculum for students. SGCS will use the donation toward investing in bees for the school’s beehives and expanding the school’s vegetable gardens by adding more raised beds and lengthening the growing season potential with new row covers and cold frames. First, fifth, and seventh grade students use the gardens in their agricultural and nutritional units.
