BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Kellogg's will add nutritional information to the front of its cereal boxes later this year.
The label will identify the percentage of calories, total fat and sodium as well as grams of sugar per serving, and will highlight nutrients such as calcium, potassium, magnesium and vitamins.
“Consumers want easier ways to identify nutritional choices,” said Celeste Clark, Kellogg's senior vice president of global nutrition. “The label will provide a quick snapshot that complements the nutrition facts panel.”
The news comes at a time when companies are aiding consumers in their quest for healthier options.
PepsiCo/Frito-Lay highlights products that contribute to healthy living with a green Smart Spot icon; Kraft Foods' Sensible Solutions green flag system identifies the better-for-you qualities of more than 500 products meeting criteria derived from U.S. Dietary Guidelines.
Retailers are simplifying these claims with their own shelf-edge programs.
“We created Guiding Stars to cut through the confusion,” Caren Epstein, spokeswoman for Hannaford Bros., told SN last month.
Likewise, Publix Super Markets serves up nutritional information in easily digestible quantities with its Nutritional Facts Program.
“We continue to find ways to educate consumers about their choices without inundating them,” said spokeswoman Maria Brous.
