PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway said it is launching a month-long campaign to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research and education, starting last week. Friday, the retailer gathered a group of cancer research organizations, Bay Area elected officials and athletes at the company's King Street Ballpark Store in San Francisco in a show of support for prostate cancer research and awareness. Presentations were given by representatives from the Prostate Cancer Foundation, University of California San Francisco Comprehensive Cancer Center administrative director Gerrie Shields and San Francisco supervisor Bevan Dufty, as well as Oakland A's pitcher Huston Street and Major League great Vida Blue. The outreach at Safeway's Ballpark Store also included information booths and free prostate cancer screenings. "Tackling big challenges like prostate cancer requires collaboration," said Larree Renda, executive vice president, chief strategist and administrative officer and chairwoman of the Safeway Foundation. "Today's event proves that partnerships between the business, medical, sports and political worlds can make a meaningful difference in preventing and curing cancer."
