GREEN BAY, Wis. — Skogen’s Festival Foods will launch the NuVal nutritional scoring system in its 13 stores in August.

The system assigns foods a score from 1 to 100; the higher the score, the higher the food’s nutrition.

The retailer’s registered dietitian Stephanie Walker decided on NuVal after reviewing several systems ranging from Smart Choices, which has since been discontinued, to Hannaford Bros.’ Guiding Stars.

"NuVal has very sophisticated science behind the score. That complex science is boiled down into one easy to interpret score. Consumers don't always know what nutrient claims mean, or what one or two stars says about a product. People get numbers," she said, adding that the score takes into account more than 30 factors.
