QUINCY, Mass. — As part of an effort to prevent allergic reactions to food, Stop & Shop has replaced the tree nuts it once sold from its bulk bins with prepackaged varieties. “We did this in response to parents of children with nut allergies and others who wrote to us with safety concerns, as severe allergic reactions can occur from peanut and tree nut dust,” said Andrea Astrachan, consumer advisor at Stop & Shop. The retailer has also expanded its gluten-free food selections and has dedicated space within its natural and organic departments to products that are free of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. “New, great-tasting gluten-free pastas, baking mixes and snacks can help people with celiac disease eat a more varied diet, so we are expanding the selection of these convenient products,” said Astrachan. Stop & Shop’s actions are part of its commitment to the National Food Safety Education month of September. This year’s theme is “Take Action to Prevent an Allergic Reaction.”
