LOS ANGELES — Addressing the large numbers of people without health insurance in California, Vallarta Supermarkets here will be participating in Feria del Mercado y de La Salud (Free Health and Market Fair) weekend events during August that will provide an estimated 6,500 free health checkups.

The checkups will take place in Latino communities within Victorville, Tulare, Baldwin Park, Valley Glen, Palmdale, Porterville, Fresno and Bakersfield.

The following health issues will be covered: glucose/diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts, cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index, vision, dental, vaccines, mammograms, illegal drug prevention and family planning, among others.

Wellness information and related educational materials will also be distributed. “Consumers will walk away from these events with a sense of empowerment knowing that they have received the latest information on healthy eating so they can make well-informed decisions at home,” the chain, which operates 40 stores, said in a statement.
